In my experience, tells like the ones talked about by Caro are very rarely exhibited.


Verbal clues? It is not necessary to need verbal clues to beat up on fish at the 200 NL game at the casino. They are so bad, they give you their money.

I don't like to talk to people that much at a live table. I don't show cards unless called. I do not like to answer their questions like "do you want action?" This is why I wear headphones.

I just like to listen to music, and range them by their body language, betting, and dynamics. It works well for me.

Just remember, everyone is going to have a different way of getting things done. It helps me really tune in my radar listening to music. I don't know what it is. I am so on with my reads when I am jamming out, and playing my A-game.

However, you have made some very good points. Definately food for thought.

I really liked what you had to say about focusing on one player for a while, and only him. It is very good advice. I am going to try this, and see what I can spot after paying very close attention to one guy for a while.

You are close - I read about it from him on his website, did not see it on youtube. I honestly just never thought he would allow free stuff of his to be posted there. I wonder if he did it or if it's copied from something? I guess you cannot stop it from being done anyway.

Hard to believe, but I am actually new to using youtube, so some things still surprise me, lol. I Never much cared for it. Too many folks sitting at home being armchair quarterbacks in front of a webcam. I just misjudged the site I guess, after seeing a few vids by folks who made them while sitting in their underwear for all the world to see at home, claiming to have the secrets of life or some such BS. Or stupid pet tricks, cute cats (sic). Plus, I actually run across people who believe everything they see there, too. Sad. You really gotta verify everything you see or read on the web.

Anyway, I am just now realizing it's uses, like for this; so I am glad you told me, I will check it out.

Solid point about watching one person in particular. I'm pretty comfortable at a live table now after having put in a good number of hours, but I know I still miss a lot of the non-verbal behavior going on at the table. So I'm probably going to try watching just one person the next time I play. I imagine I'll do the person on my left, since that is the most natural to me (I'm usually watching them more anyway to see if they look at their cards in advance etc).

Anyway, I'd like to reiterate what Beanfacekilla was saying about habits/game-modes being different for everyone. While I would tend to agree that not wearing headphones allows you to take in more information, if the act of having to deal with people/hear everything going on causes you to play worse, then definitely wear headphones.

Many people who are playing 1/2 NL Hold'em in casinos do not know what they are doing, and most are not properly bankrolled to play a game. Many will go to a table with $100 and that is there limit to play. Big raises and all-in's can scare these types, leading to lots of free money in a pot for people playing in late position.

Just remember you can't "act out" the same way in a casino that you may act at home/online when you suffer a bad beat,lol.

I played Live at my local casino and I was not comfortable playing the no limit games. I chose to buy in with the minimum of a hundred. I found that speaking with the table bosses and observing the table games was helpful. I decided to play the $3-$6 limit games and the crazy all-in guys were not present. It seem to have a better more cautious field of players. I did fairly well after a few hours cashing out with an extra $100. It really gave me a great chance to get used to reading people and just the general feel of live action. I probably will move up to the $4-$8 Limit games next time and then try the $1-$2 NL at a later date. Good Luck to you

Just a quick point on tells when it comes to limit: Limit players will typically exhibit fewer tells, but they will also be less worried about hiding them. Tells just aren't as important in limit as compared to no limit, because your betting action can never open up the possibility of your whole stack coming into play, and most bets are a small fraction of the total pot. People experience more anxiety (and therefore many more tells) in no limit, where most bets are a sizable percent of the pot and people's entire stacks can come into play.

play tight, and when you win a hand try not to knock your chips over with your shaky hands hahah. I remember I won a 200 dollar pot my first time ever I was shaking like a feather. OMG! lol now if I win 200 bucks and feel like I played the hand bad and could have gotten another 200 im pissed lol. Good luck

Play tight and just try and analyse how people are playing. Usually people are pretty bad on 1/2, bloating pots a lot. Also even if you play really tight they often don't adjust towards you and play their hand just as they would vs anyone else.

Live poker for me is a huge rush. I never really get bored. With online I get very bored and I miss the social aspect of the game.

I haven't been yet in casino, my friend was. He wanted to play poker and slots.
But, somehow he decided to play roulette, he doubled up his money and just went out of the casino lol

i'd suggest you to first play a tournament or sit and go in a casino. that way your maximum loss is defined and you can get used to the live poker there. although that's the way i did it and with a buy in of 40$ the field was very weak compared to online poker..

I love vacations to vegas for live poker. I play online all the time but it's much more exciting in person. I don't have casinos within a 4 hour drive so it sucks. It's just reassuring to know you aren't getting "cheated" or "set up " by the software, when you make a bad play you have no one to blame but yourself.

I want to try my hand at some live MTT's. Just looking to have some fun. I have no interest in gambling to make money. This is for play.

I will have to drive a few hours, so I don't want to play one MTT and drive home. I think I will get a hotel room and stay the night.

In that case, I think I might do this:
6pm $120 NLH
8pm $80 NLH

The next day,
9AM $60NLH

That way, I get to play in 3 MTT's for $260,
and make the driving worthwhile.

With 3 MTT's, I will also be able to play more aggressively,
knowing I won;t go home after going all in in my first hand! like this chump.

Is there a certain night that is better?
Should I go on a weekend or a weeknight?
Different types of players based on day of the week?

Any place I can find a deal on a hotel?
I don't give a damn about the hotel, except as a place to crash.

I went this weekend and had a nice time.
There are hotels about 15 mins away that are 80-$100/night.

I played in the $80 MTT Sat. night.
I lasted about 2 hours until level 6.
Got busted out by someone who hit a set on runner/runner!

I played another MTT the next morning for $60.
Busted out pretty quickly. A few bad beats and you're done.
I used the "start to think shove at 20BB" mentality.

I also played $200 worth of a cash game, was down to $75,
but then walked away with $400+ after a large hand where I made a good call.
So, I covered both my MTT fees and filled up my gas tank.

Playing live sure is different. It seems to play faster. And if the dealer is sloppy, sometimes, you don't immed. know it's your turn.

Another key difference is that you don't know how much is in the pot. Live, you need to start tracking about how much is in there for value bets and calling .

I had a nice time, but don't plan to visit too often with the 2.5 hour drive. If there was a local casino, I think I'd play live from time to time. Probably for the best, as gambling is a sick sick vice that can truly F with you.

I think I prefer the $300 cash table over MTT.
With MTT, you are pretty much guaranteed to not win.
With cash table, you can be up, down, or break even at any time.
I like those odds much better. Esp. if you know how to quit while ahead.

Agree with mtt it starts to be a game of bingo because too many donks and most of the low buy in ones are re buy
