As far as the SNG's, my suggestion is that you start with tournaments with the smallest number of players.  Single table would be the best, if it's available.
 
With that in mind, any poker book that talks about starting hands and their positional value is enough to get you started.  I started with a Sklansky beginner book, or maybe his low limit ring game book.  Also, read everything at Cardschat.  Here, you will learn how other players think.  You can get some GREAT ideas and insights.
 
As far as play is concerned, it has been my experience that, unless you get on a really tight table, playing recommended starting hands and folding the rest will get you within sight of the money.  That leaves you with the task of learning how to win the hands you decide to play post flop.
 
Keep reading books, take notes on the other players, and recognize and learn from your mistakes.  Do this and good things are going to happen.
 
Meanwhile, keep winning the freerolls until you get positive cashflow on the paid games.
