Many antivirus programs out there suck and a there are holes in a lot of firewalls that aren't extremely difficult to get around if you're experienced. The biggest thing is to just make sure that you aren't going to sites that are going to be suspect to aiding in compromising your computer. Porn sites, warez sites, etc. It also might not be a bad idea to reformat and reinstall your OS.
