Just started the micro stakes section and so far, it's actually a lot better than I thought it would be. I'm liking this book a lot so far. More than likely not going to be very useful to anyone who is playing above low stakes, but then again, many of those players won't be needing to read a book like this anyhow.

I mean...do ppl ever THINK about things or do they just take em as they come? Or am i being too philosophical and over-thinkin things?

I'm a winning poker player for Christ's sake. I've made a killing utilizing my psychology skills and HS math. I'm telling u how to make a mill w/o breaking ur back.

Because even if you make a lot of money playing poker, you would realise that huge swings are possible. Now if you are a very popular player and have a good reputation you can bank off of this, sell ebooks or w/e for like 400 a copy and people would buy it. The information itself does not have to be revolutionary and most of the people you actually play are going to know it already but it does not hurt to make some form of steady income.

Many people have told me these were the better books to get on cash game and It would really help, I do alright in cash games but I really would like to move up to a little higher money levels as right now Im .05/.10 level and I aint crushing them but I am able to profit sometimes and even out a lot and when Im feeling that poker rush, I end up losing but I gotta figure out how much I feel comfy with losing as I havent started BR stuff yet as I feel Im paying for an education

And he has great ways of explaining his math skills, Robertie too... and peeps buy because his books are good and make sense and improve most peoples play and thinking.... :hmmmm: Both of their backgrounds in chess and backgammon speak to numbers and analysis, but he makes it accessible to idiots like me.

Ok I see i wasnt specific enough. Lets go into the details a bit. Every poker player who wrote a book is a millionaire.

Now...as a self made millionaire ur gonna be smart enough to invest in lets sayyyyy....an apartment complex for eg. Google stocks. Or like Doyle even better, ur own online poker site.

So w that in mind Harrington is no different. Any of those business ventures r more profitable than a book, long term.

I truly believe that those book profits r not the motivation. It doesnt make sense. It cant be.

You do realise to write a book, you need like 0 start up cash if you already have a publisher?

The motivation for writing a book, being a poker pro is not the revenue that book generates.

There's a 160K ppl on PS lets say on average plus another 80K on FT. If we say half of em pick up a poker book(WHICH I HIGHLY DOUBT) for 19.95 thats roughly 240.000 dollars.

U wanna sit up straight and tell me someone who's networth is around 7mill (Harrrington) worries about a one time $240K, which he's probably making annually from his other investments.

C'mon man.

These ppl dont write books to make money. There's a reason folks like Patrik Antonius dont read poker books.

No profit in writting everyone solid.


There is no reason for super high stakes players to write a book there is not enough in it but for someone like harrington is not in that kind of tax bracket, 240k is plenty

A few questions: Have you ever played poker at the stakes Harrington plays? Have you ever played poker as long as Harrington has played poker? What if you were a successful poker player for 10 years, but your family (and yourself) were used to the high-rate of income, plus you were still winning, just you were getting bored with it. You wanted to travel, to learn, to do something other than grind it out at a table with strangers who all knew you and you knew only a few of them.

"Hey, Sly, how's the kids?" They'd ask, and you wouldn't even know who they were.

"Man, I have a ton of money," you'd say to yourself one day, "and it's all because of poker, but I just don't love the game anymore. Sure, I can still win, but I wanna spend time with my kids, my grandkids, my wife. She deserves such and such. They all do." But damn, you still need money.

The market isn't showing the same growth it was before the war, you've got enough to put all of your grandkids through college should your children not be able to, you've got a beautiful house, lovely cars, and you start spending your life away from the felt.

"Well, maybe I can pass this information on to somebody. Who wants to be one of the greatest and have their knowledge be forgotten with their passing?"

I don't know. I think I've gone beyond making my point. He doesn't need the money, and maybe he doesn't want to play poker that much anymore.

And I'm pretty sure when he does play, he's using different strategies (I would be surprised to see Harrington trying to grind out a living at 50NL, 6-handed), or maybe the strategies he's writing don't apply to the game he plays.

Of course he's doing it for the money. For the reputation.

You can never have too much money. Even if he doesn't have grandkids, he may someday, and then great grandkids, and a generation after that. I'm sure he'll want as much money saved up as possible so they can all live comfortably.

Or he's just going to buy a gigantic mountain of blow and go out in style.

Maybe he likes writing? I like writing. Most writers like writing.

@TheDarkSide....i know what u mean. But we're always looking at things from OUR point of view. Hell yea the money would be the main motivation for US at THIS point. But if we were multi-millionaires, landlords etc. i'm not sure those $200K in book profits would change our lifestyle drastically.

Sly, once again you are showing that you know nothing about profits. Just like in the other post. Just because someone is worth 7, 10, 25 million does not mean that $250k means nothing to them. Is that money going to change his life? No. But if I quit my job to take another job that is the same but pays $5k more a year going to change my life? No. Am I going to take it, yes. He does have a lot of other investments, and this is just another one of them. From how you understand investments and how a business works, makes me think that you're the type of player who thinks bankroll management is playing with your entire bankroll on the table.

Agree with Hamm, Sly. Have you ever heard of Royalties in association with writing such good books? It pays a lot...and maybe he did do it just to help some noobs like me to play better poker. Who knows...but his book will continue to sell as long as there is someone who is learning to play poker exists!

Ya I write also, also he is dam good at it (he didnt sell all those books for nothing and people still use them) and good at explaining the game his way.

Yes and as others said here, some people like to pass lessons on (especially when they have mastered things themselves). There are tons of posts slamming Dan's credibility and motives on lots of forums. Boring.

Can we get back to talking about the book? Has anyone but me seen it? Opinions? :hmmmm:

Doyle Brunson has admitted on more than one occassion he regrets having written Super System. But at the time he was among the best , if not the best, No limit Hold'em player. He priced it at $100 in the early 70's. He also took some heat from fellow pro's for "smartening up the chumps" That
book was the first of many steps to resuscitating "dead money" LOL

So far I think there are a lot of great points to this, some mentioned above. Particularly use of HUD and probable ranges at micros, characterization of types of players... I have read everything else of his and this is a great practical topper. I am jumping around section to section right now...
