To be honest at the lower stakes you dont typically need to much guts or gamble to be successful as straight forward poker will be fine. Now to be great at higher stakes poker you need to have the guts to triple barrel or moves of the like with draws or air because you think your opponent has the capability to fold almost his entire range. 
 
Dont call with shitty cards "knowing" they will hit, it doesnt make sense and it terrible poker and not what anyone who knows what they are talking about meant. 
 
Another case I can think of that is actually much more applicable is being agressive in tournies, most notable around the bubble. Going all in if you are short staked or putting pressure on weak players is typically good, especially around the bubble as nobody wants to go out. Its not good to have the mindset that all you hope for is to money, the money is at the end and stealing becomes pretty easy around the bubble and should be taken advantage of. 
 
But no, do not call with bad cards. raise to steal, fire a c bet when you didnt hit, these are needed and take guts I suppose. The more you play the more comfortable you will get, but i would not try anything fancy at lower stakes and not fold your way to the money if there are good opportunities to get some easy chips.
