A couple of people have said things to the effect that they are a winning player when they play properly/concentrate/aren't drunk/aren't mucking about/play within their bankroll etc.
 
If you are playing for fun and don't mind hits to the bankroll then this is fine and dandy, but I would suggest that being a winning player when you are playing your 'A' game is relatively straightforward. The tricky part is not playing drunk, or at the wrong level, or getting bored and playing too many hands, or playing tired or on tilt.
 
It took me a long while and a lot of variance in my bankroll to realise that making excuses for my poor play by saying it didn't count for one reason or another was hurting my game. There's plenty of players with a great A game who because they can't manage a bankroll or because once a week they play and drink are losing players. Avoiding these drains on cash is as important as selecting the right cards or knowing the odds.
 
Just to say again if you play for fun or at levels where you are not concerned with the ups and downs then the above doesn't apply, the profit in the game is the enjoyment of it, but a winning player is truly someone who has won more from the game than they have lost since the first hand they were dealt.
