As at-large public awareness of bicycle racing began to normalize cycling and create acceptance as a real deal, new people found it hard to plug in. [B]The community lacked the infrastructure to accommodate all of the new interest. [/B]As the infrastructure wasn't sufficient to serve, when Armstrong crashed with doping, participation in competitive cycling went off the cliff: decline in sponsorship, the public became adverse to cheaters. It's obvious that there exist and persists in the public's eye that poker is gambling, when in fact the law is siding with the fact that poker is a game of skill, if not without risk, as in all games. The bicycling community is not unlike poker community, people getting together to enjoy an activity they love. With cycling the club structure has always been weak with little industry support. At the local level, the community relies on volunteers to conduct activities. Because a lack of common vision, the community naturally fragmented, everyone doing their own thing. We all understand that, but the outcome is the community becomes less and less friendly to new people joining the sport. There are other factors such as prolific eCommerce, social media etc, Those things contribute to more fragmentation. Not too mention that bicycle racing is frikin hard as hell, has become expensive, and takes time, bike racing is in decline because welcoming and sustainable communities are not common. All of that said, If the community addresses the market need before a champion emerges, the community is in better position to accommodate the forthcoming new interest. If a woman won the WSOP. That would be huge, but then what? Where does someone that doesn't want to go to a bar or a casino go? Online seems like part of the solution. With that, re positioning the poker game experience in a light that poker is a game with the high integrity, high value, welcoming to all, a learning and educational experience not unlike how chess presents itself so that the poker game can be a legit conversation with the family during the holidays.
