Quality of play

I play holdem regularly with a group of friends of mixed abilities and find it difficult to enjoy poker with them because although we are all fish of various species most aren't interested in improving their game, so we end up with showdowns on almost every hand because someone gets married to a pair and then rivers a set.

It is better at the local pub where the standard of play is higher but I'm unsure how to improve my game to the level where I am consistent and have more success in raising/reraising/checking.

Is there any advice available?

I had pocket aces, player goes all in with 10 high today and jack high yesterday, on both days they make their flush on the river.

patience, practice and looking back over and learning from your mistakes. Just like life really

For me it has to be experience. There are loads of things that could happen at the poker table, regardless of what game and/or type you play.

Having experienced these situations while being a new player, as an advanced beginner and a reg, you will know what your different opponents at the table's thought processes are and how to exploit their actions.

Also having the experience with dealing with long break even and losing stretches is key to successful poker players in my opinion,

No it was an old joke on 2plus2 with a link to a clip of a news reporter saying it. Unfortunately the clip was removed from youtube

If "good" means winning money consistently, then I would say table selection is the most important thing. Good tables selection is often the difference between winning and losing money no matter how skillful you are.

While many have noted the importance of patience, knowledge, hand reading, etc; I have to say the ability to learn from experience is critical. If I continue to play the same hands in the same ways and continue to struggle, then I am not becoming a better player. My game should change as experience teaches me to have more patience, read hands better, and learn more about how to play the game.

Patience. Keep throwing in those crap hands. Too many players get disgusted if they have not played a hand for awhile, and they bid on that junk. Bad idea

Yeah I'm trying to learn that. Sometimes I justify it by telling myself that if I don't get involved in a few hands then if I do get a monster they'll spot it a mile off but I know thats flawed logic.
