But when you have become a decent NL Hold'em  player, there are so many benefits in learning new variants. For instance, once I've heard Daniel Negreanu say that if you learn the fundamentals of Limit Hold'em, you will get back to No-Limit more aggressive than before, because Limit Hold'em is a game where aggressiveness is crucial. And you see, we still are takling about Hold'em.

Other variants (and mixed games) will make your thinking process much better. Also, the field is a lot reduced, which reduces variance, but the field tends to be a bit more difficult than Hold'em players, because in general only good NLHE players start moving into other variants. Of course, in micro and small stakes we still find a lot of recreational players, but the more you advance, the more it starts to become difficult.

When there is a big series, like SCOOP, WCOOP or MicroMillions, it is easier to battle for 1st place in other variants, than it is in Hold'em, because the Hold'em field is a monster field. So I believe that other variants are still a good alternative to play. But not for beginners. There is greater rewards in Hold'em (and more material to study).
