I've always wondered what was the right move here....

When I'm in the pot with another player, and I have a good hand, such as, AK, AQ, KQ. When the flop comes, it's all low cards and I'm sitting there with a high card. What is the right move?

As with many things poker-related the answer is, "it depends". Things to consider are whether you are first or second to act after the flop and the exact nature of the preflop betting.

In general though, assuming you led the betting preflop it's never a huge mistake to make a bet of 1/2 to 2/3 the pot post flop and see what happens.

Okay, that's what I pretty much do if I'm the first one to act. If the other player acts first, and he checks, should I bet?

As Rex said, it depends.

Assuming you raised preflop and were called, you showed strength before the flop was dealt. 80% of the time that I raised preflop I bet, regardless of whether I hit the flop or not. But it depends on the nature of the cards on the flop, what I think of the opponent, and I bet much less frequently if there is more than one opponent.
