Even though I never read this book I heard a lot of good things about the harrington Holdem things. The books Ive read on tournament poker so far I haven't been too impressed with. You also might want to check out some of Phil Hellmuths books. I can't remember the exact name of it, but there was one book that Phil wrote that was real good.

Why not just play some $1 entry tournaments and try being really aggressive and see how it works for you? Don't play stupid.. just hard when you need to.

That totally depends on what style of poker you want to play. I am very patient and like to play tight, so my favorite book is How to Win the Championship, by TJ Cloutier. If you want more action, and are comfortable taking all kinds of risks, I suggest Every Hand Revealed, by Gus Hansen.

'The poker tournament formular" by A Scneider.

Its not a great book for teaching you to play tournaments.

However it is probably the only book written which teaches you how to pick a tournament and asses your chances of winning it based on its structure.

Well worth a read.

As for actually playing one, once you have picked it, HOH definately

I thought this one was excellent, but its definately not a 'how to play poker book'

It is what it says it is... Gus Hansen explains his thinking behind every hand that he played in the Ausi Gold tournament.. which he wins.

Its amazing to see how much thought he puts into each decision.. and how many hands he actually folds because on the TV he comes across as playing any and all two cards given.

It dosnt explain his hand selection, reads etc etc.. it isnt an instructional book.. but it is well worth a read too.

I wouldn't say it's the BEST book, yet I can tell you it helped me immensely in understanding the overall picture of a tournament. It was a sleeper in that no one told me about it. I came across it in the book store one day. It's Eric Lindgreen's book on tournament poker. I have loaned it out, so I don't remember the full name. It is the only book he has written. It let me into the mind of a great tournament player. I think it is a well kept secret and everyone I have shared it with has been impressed.

The poekr tournament formula is a really good book, i would reccommend it!

OMG.. I just wrote a HUGE response here and I lost it.. .maybe timed out or something? (has happened to me before).
Anyways.. I won't write three pages this time.. keep it real brief.

I disagree strongly with above statement. There are many great books out there that can improve one's game immensely!!!!

For tourney play (yah... my other post went into great detail with a zillion examples, etc.)..
GET Harrington On Holdem (Vol. 1, 2 & 3).

For advanced tourney stuff,.. grab Winning Poker Tournaments - One Hand At A Time, by co-authors PearlJammed, Apestyles, & Rizen. It is more geared towards high buyin online mtt play.

For live tourneys there are other books to consider. Your typical cheaper buyin casino tourney is genearly fast play.. ie. ratio of blinds in comparison to starting stack & blind structure makes them need to be played differently. A author for those tourneys is Arnold Snyder Poker Tournament Formula (2 editions).

It really depends what stage your game is at and what you think you need to work on.

As an all-round comprehensive tournament text, the Harrington on Hold 'em series is hard to go past.

If you want to work on your aggression, I found Killer Poker - No Limit by Vorhaus to be a very useful text. It applies equally to cash games and tournaments.

Does this approach really work though? If you or your opponents are not particularly bothered about losing $1 or winning a small amount you tend to play far differently

By taking this approach you will only get to understand the real basics

4 betting in a $100 mid stack game is vastly different to a $1 deepstack
