Live poker, no luck

I have played about 10 or 12 live tournments at my local casino. I always follow basic tournament strategy early on in the tournaments by only playing premium hands like high pocket pairs and and A with a high kicker. Whenever I raise 4x the BB with these hands the flop does not cooaperate, and whenever I try to bluff I always get called down to the river. This process always leaves me short stacked and frustrated with my play. I just want to know if anyone out there can help me with a different strategy to help me play better live poker.

What's the structure of these tournaments? Ie: starting stack size, starting blinds, and level duration?

If they're starting you with, say 1500 chips, 25-50 blinds and 15 minute levels (not uncommon, I believe) the tournament will actually play a lot more like an online turbo and you may find you don't have the luxury of waiting for only premium hands.

Other than that, successful tournament strategy is pretty much the same live as it is online.

If you're playing against calling stations, don't bluff. Don't cbet, don't bluff period. Raise good hands preflop, and cbet if you hit. If they won't fold to your bluffs, they're not going to fold to your cbets when you hit, and you're going to make tons of money when you hit and they chase their runner runner straight draw. Sure there will be tourneys where you're card dead and can't double up at all, but when you finally get that hand it'll make up for the other ones.

Live play takes a totally different mindset than online. Live players are much softer, and don't fire nearly as light.

When I'm playing a lot of online, it takes me time to adjust to live... like Zach said, bluff less, value bet more! Look for ways to make thin value bets if they're giving you the power, as you'll get called down light (totally player-dependent, though... obviously

As I play my cashgames very agressive (30/60L SH) I play all tournaments, both live as online, very tight till 3/4part of the tournament.

In that way I allmost allways come to the last 10% of players...after that I need some luck because most of the time I am short stacked.

Its for me a good way to reach a lot of finals (but sigh...never get to the BIG money)

Thanks for the reply guys, to the first response the tournaments vary, but I usually the starting stack is 1000 chips and 10/20 blinds to start increasing every half hour, the other tournament I play there is same starting stack but the blinds double every half hour so it plays a lot faster. My online style of play has been pretty good to me but I just have a hard time transitioning to the actual felt.
