There is a lot of both, I find that playing live for some reason I tend to consistently fair better and skill plays more of a dominant role.  Online skill still factors in greatly but you run into a whole lot more situations where insane statistical improbabilities occur where you are trusting software to give truly random results.  I think its naive to believe that they do and the people who guilt trip others for even suggesting it and say its because they just aren't good enough, I think that's something that benefits online sites and that they can kind of hide behind.  That being said online poker is still far better than no poker at all and its a good place to get great practice in as well as win good money if you can just endure the absurd variance.  Anyone who tries to convince me its 100% natural variance online I will look you dead in the eyes and laugh.  You can be naive if you want to be.   But yes you can still win there ironically enough, just need more luck than in live play when its physical interaction with cards and players and no software medium between it.
