I think your misunderstanding what I say, in my post. I'm not into the ego I'm better than you thing so some of you can make all the assumptions you want as to my credibility. :)

However my advice is real advice, not robot advice or one tournament win, online poker "pro" who hit a hot streak once and now thinks they are Daniel Negreanu - there are so many out there. :D

What I say isn't damaging, it should be taken on board so that new players dont fall into the same trap as most.

You cant win at poker by playing tight aggressive and waiting for premium hands. You need to mix it up alot. The two basic reasons are:

1. New players get commited to big hands since they come so few and far between and therefore think they have the divine right to win with them. How often have you seen people call big bets down to the river with Ace high from AK and nothing more? Or gone all in pre flop early to mind way through a tournament with hands like AQ and AK.

2. Premium hands win a little and lose alot. They look so pretty but they aren't. The can lose just like any other two cards and very often do because people just cant fold good hands.

3. If you play tight aggressive you will just get bullied and wont win anything because the moment you do make a move, anyone with half a brain will just fold. Very few people are going to call a tight player when he raises and very few calling stations are going to wait around and keep calling if they dont got you beat with rag hands or are waiting to outdraw you.

Not trying to sound patronising guys but I've learnt alot the hard way and been playing a long time. I read a book once when I first started playing poker many years ago and it cost me alot of money. It told me that tight aggressive poker was the "perfect winning style of play".

Its not true, because everyone plays that same style these days on the internet and therefore you need to attack from a different angle in order to stay ahead of the game.

We have all got to determine what we mean by tight aggressive...

I`ve been playing poker for about 8 months and have been successful in both SNG`s and MTT, playing mainly on Ladbrokes.com and most recently Pokerstars, under the name Ronaldadio - so u can check me out if you wish!!! (unfortunatly, due to work commitments I only play a few times a week, so I do not play a massive amount of games)

I play Tight/ aggressive and I roughly follow this way of playing https://www.cardschat.com/showthread.php?t=65467

I say `roughly` because in the early stages I look for premium hands, reducing my chance of taking a bad beat by the "less experienced" players. Having said that, if I feel the table is very tight, I might raise 4 times the big blind in middle position with A8s for a change, or call with AA, etc - so I do change my game, although I would claim to be tight aggressive.

I think the thing that got me Allsop, is that I would love to play the Daniel Negrano/ Phil Ivey way I see on TV, but I know most of the time when u see these guys on TV its a final table and they have massive stacks - I would love to watch these guys early in a tourny with 1500 chips, sitting with AK, KK, QQ in the big blind and some "less experienced" player going all in with their 1500 chips on the button - A situation u find yourself in on a regular basis on line.

Also, I think it is wrong for you to say that playing tight aggressive the way you suggest (i.e. waiting for premium hands only) is not right for less experienced players. Whenever I read books by the top pros they suggest less experienced players should play less hands rather than more.

However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion!!!

Im sure there are many but the ones that make any real profit at sngs and MTT's are the people who play $50 buyins and up. If your a little rough at NLHE cash games it might be better to play LHE ones. Get decent at that with a rakeback plan and your set.

How do you work this out?

Regarding the above statement you made, you think ppl would be better playing $50+ buyins. I`m not doubting this, but where do you get your stats from to back this up and what level do you think the players should be at?

The reason I ask is I play mainly $10-25 buy in MTT & SNG. I do ok. I have flirted with the idea of raising my stakes. Any thoughts or advice?

Raising your stakes is fine if your bankroll can handle it, otherwise you'll find much more experienced, patient players and end up getting quite frustrated when you find you don't win as often. The payouts are better though. I find the limits don't matter as much as the time of day you play. During the day, there are much better players and at night...after the bar maybe...much more fish. You're all right to play about any time on the weekends too.

I make most money of cash games but I do well in trnys also . I dont understand why so many people dont make money in cash games if you consider yourself a good player. They are a different game but not that different.

I play mainly at cash games - purely because the chance of profit is quicker :p
Also i can get into a groove easier and begin to tell who is who and play them in the right way.

Sure you get bad beats but also if you know the players style you can get them to pay you off more because of their own faults :).

If you do play more cash, the most important thing is not to let the daily varience affect you too much, sure your going to be gutted losing, but was it from 1 hand, a bad mistake, unlucky cards etc.

The same in reverse is true when winning, where you 'in the zone', on a run or picking the players to call.

I manage to have more win days than loses, but the loses still bite

Never ever gamble outside of your comfort zone - scared money doesnt win
