Last night at a live cash game I seemed to have started a major controversey when I pulled out my notebook and started making notes about some of the hands I was involved in. I've been doing this a while, and most of the players I play on a regular basis with don't seem to have a problem with it - but last night we had a couple of newcomers at our game and they were very uncomfortable because of it.
 
I explained that I wasn't making notes about them as players (although I think if I was I have an absolute right to do so) but I was making notes about the hands themselves so I could go back over my play in certain situations later (plus, when I post live hand histories here at Cardschat for analysis I get the history from my notes). 
 
The uncomfortable players said it was rude and bad poker etiquette for me to be making notes at the table. One of them actually cashed out his chips and left. 
 
My question is - IS it bad etiquette? If it is, would it be more acceptable if I left the table and made notes in the next room? Am I really doing something frowned on by "real" poker players without knowing it?
