I don't think you have to excel at math, but I do think you need to have enough of it in you to be able to think out strategies for yourself (away from the table). While it's theoretically possible to just read the work that others have performed, you're not likely to be able to mentally digest - and remember it - it as well if you don't know how to perform the calculations yourself.
