They explain that they can send a tow-truck but that if the error isn't on their side I'll have to pay for it myself. I rapidly calculate the EV of the situation and decide that I can at least try to make it back to the shop; if it gets too ugly I'll just have to pull over and call the tow-truck after all. I start driving, but boy, the car is vibrating pretty loudly now. I try to find speeds where it doesn't seem to be so bad but I can hardly find any. About a mile from my house, I pull off the road and notice that I'm having difficulties turning the wheel, it feels sluggish. I stop, get out of the car, and now is when I notice that the front left wheel is about to come off. There are supposed to be five bolts holding it in, but now there's only four. And those remaining four are all but falling off as well. I felt a little dumb for not checking that immediately when the vibrations started (I've driven with a slightly loose wheel before and should recognize it) but my mind was stuck on the fact that he had changed something with the breaks and that it reacted differently when I hit the breaks compared to running in neutral, etc. Anyway, I'm a bit pissed off at my car mechanic since a wheel falling off in a 70km/h road, which would certainly have happened if I had kept driving, is not a fun thing to imagine.
