In order to be successful and not go broke, you need to set yourself a certain bank roll management that you are comfortable with and you need to be disciplined enough to stick to it.

I'm assuming you are a fairly new player so the more buy ins you have the better it is, this definitely depends on how comfortable you are though. I would suggest having like 30-40 buy ins depending on what level you are playing (I'm talking about cash games just so you know), Then once you have 40 buy ins for the next level, I would move up and take a stab at it and basically just see what it feels like.

For moving down, depending on your discipline, I would move down after you lose 7-10 buy ins and still have plenty of buy ins for the lower level to build back up and come back to the level i was playing.

Try searching, bank roll management, I'm sure you will find a lot of threads on that.
