I've also rented apts. that were in excess of $2,000/mth (not where I'm living now obv.).
 
I'd consider moving to a cheaper area but I don't know of any?
btw.... I've got a river teeming with rainbow ~ 2mins. walk from my door, one of the best skihills in NorthAmerica ~8min. drive up the road, two excellent golf courses, an area that has been called the Mtn.Biking Capital of N.A. (self-proclaimed though, lol), beautiful lakes that warm up to 80+degrees in July, mild climates in the winter months (avg. temp is prob. +2C, maybe +4C... that's around 40degress for you american folks).
Can't beat it! (cheap flight to the big city).. <10mins. to the US border, etc. etc.
 
oh yah... & local poker tournaments happening a few times/mth., ~$50-$100 buyin, ~100 entrants.  Private $1/2 cash games going on nitely in the area... filled with HUGE fish (the kind who wear their pants pulled down so far it looks like they're carrying a load in there.... with their ballcaps on sideways, etc...."I got bottom pr.,... I'm allin!!")
