There was another recent thread about mucked cards. Here's the thing, you are responsible for your cards, not the dealer. So it's up to you to protect your hand. I usually use my "lucky" 50¢ piece to cap my cards. As I said in the other thread, in a pinch I will take off my watch and use it to protect my cards. I know alot of people don't where watches anymore, but you can use anything, your zippo, your car keys, anything. It's better safe than sorry. I've seen it happen and heard enough people say it happened to them to learn from their misfortune. 
 
In a home/pub game, I guess it would be up to the players to come to some sort of agreement that satisfies everyone. If none of you are professional dealers then mistakes are bound to be made from time to time. I would say this though, no player other than the designated dealer for the hand in progress should be handling the cards. In most casinos they will allow your cards to be returned and play to continue if your cards are retrievable from the muck. However, they will generally only check the top two cards to see if they are the cards you claim to have been dealt. Since cards are most often swept into the muck and not placed neatly on top of it, they end up somewhere in the middle of the pile and are usually unretrievable. That's why it is better to be safe. Protect your hand by capping your cards.
