I think as long as this game gives any person regardless of skill the chance to win there will be a solid entertainment value.. This is the only game in the world that if you have $10,000 you can sit down and try to beat the best in the world... Theres incredible entertainment value you in that.. and for the recreational player the idea that i can hit a big hand and win today is what will keep them coming back. They arent thinking of their poker game profit over the long run they are thinking RIGHT now.. if they win today its a profit.. they arent thinking that they lost twice that last week.

So what was this thread about again? I am lost

Sad but TRUE!
From personal experience: A friend of mine used to sell drugs, and by drugs I mean pharmaceuticals not natural growing plants or herbs, on the streets of America. There came a time in my friends life where he made a moral decision not to spread this poison on society any longer, at great financial loss to my friend.
The problem with that is this: Those "clients" of his didn't stop using drugs just because my friend ceased to be a source. They merely found another source, and through their own publicity and promotion of said drugs sucked in new users in an attempt to support themselves and their own habit.
So what was gained from this? Although my friend may feel a little better about himself, he lost a considerable and significant source of income. It is arguable that if he had stayed with his role as supplier then he could have exercised some amount of control over the amount or type of "new" users being introduced to the "pyramid". Or some how "governed" the situation and tried to keep addicts away from even more harmful drugs like meth.
This reminds me of the "problem gambler"
Just because one casino decided to stop taking advantage of problem gamblers, ten others will gladly take them under their wing! Life is full of and ultimately about choices. And it is up to the individual to make the choices best for them or their families. Problems like drug use or gambling addicts will never go away, there will always be somebody who choses the pipe or takes their children's food money to gamble with. Fixing a problem like this starts with education! A simple exercise in "cause and effect" may do.

Drug Dealers: Even maggots have their function and purpose in the universe and without them all the other functions would eventually cease to exist.
Also poker is really no different than trading stocks or other commodities in that one has to analyze data and determine what move will make them the most profit. Poker is like being a stock market investor on a macro scale. I love it

I reject the basic premise of the argument....

Poker need not PROVE its utility to the greater society in order to exist. There is no council of elders in the free world which decides what undertaking is legal based solely on utility, to the contrary, we are supposedly free to take part in any and all activities which do not infringe on the rights of others.

Maybe this is a trans-atlantic misunderstanding bc even as a liberal American I sometimes find myself a little bit disgusted by Western European attitudes vis a vis social engineering and the like.

No one forces people to play poker....everyone knows it is a competitive gambling game played for money.

Uh, apparently you didn't read the OP.
The original poster spoke EXPLICITLY of the long term feasibility/viability of poker.....even if he himself confused the matter by talking about how losing players somehow needed X/Y and Z spelled out for them or something (honestly it was pretty lol bad)...

What determines if something like poker is viable say right now...in the US is codified law, not some wider acceptance of the moral righteousness of poker because some people love stacking off to kids in hoodies.

Why would you exclude drug dealing? Not every user is a dope addict, just as every poker player is not a gambling addict. I could argue that some so-called "legitimate" professions actually do society a lot more harm

the finance sector is essentially the same as poker, everyone in that industry profits from arbitrage.

There are doctors who accept bribes from pharmaceutical companies and they are specifically being paid to prescribe the one companies drugs over another competing companies similar product. In fact I read a recent local newspaper article about such a "professional". They sometimes even prescribe medicine to people who don't necessarily need it, and then the patient becomes subject to adverse side effects etc. that do not benefit them...In general there are scumbags in every profession.

I also agree with this, for someone to make money, typically another business must be declining in profits, lose shares or be bought out, causing potential loss of jobs for entire areas, regions, companies, etc.. Business in general can be brutal, survival of the fittest and all...If poker is being treated as a business by those who intend to turn a profit so that their families and children may have a better life, should it also be brutal, such is the case in Nature and its process of evolution.

The mind set has been established in America that a man must justify everything. A man does not. We are made in God's image and He made us sovereign. As long as we do not steal or harm another we should mind our own business. Columbus was told the world is flat and Edison was told it is impossible to make an electric light bulb. Jesus has a plan for each of us and the world is busy being busy bodies.

Our value to the poker community depends not only on the rake generated by someone, but also on how your actions have affected other players around you in the game.
