very true but these films are not targeted for serious players and the average Joe hasn't a clue naturally.

So I just found out that Michael Cera is supposed to be "Player X". He's basically playing Toby McGuire.

Think I'll wait for a bit on this movie.

Molly's Game already seen?

It's been a few days since it premiered in the USA and had very good criticism from the critics and the audience, which makes me more eager to see it, unfortunately in my country I have not arrived and I can hardly wait any longer, and dresses? you like me? from 1 to 10 what score do you give? DO NOT COMMENT SPOILERS!

Overall a very enjoyable movie. Well cast & tightly directed. I'm not a poker player but the games were interesting & you very quickly get caught up in the story.

One major negative for my wife & I was the last half hour that moved at glacial speed. Another movie that was far too long & contrived to knit the plot neatly together.

Fascinating but turgid.

Most of the comments on "Rotten Tomato" ran in the positive vein. Go see it, I believe you'll find it entertaining.

Molly’s Game - The Movie

In the last few weeks I have read a dozen reviews of the Aaron Sorkin, Jessica Chastain movie of Molly Bloom’s autobiographical book Molly’s Game. Most, if not all, come to the same conclusions:

1. Great writing - Sorkin
2. Great acting - Chastain
3. Lousy “poker”movie!

The book, which I reviewed on my blog when it first came out (see robcan2017.wordpress.com and search “Molly”) was not a bad poker book. Although the book, like the movie, focuses mainly on the trials (literally at some point!) and ultimate tribulations of the heroine, you do get the feel for the world of illegal, high-stakes, secretive poker, enough so that you feel like you have read a book about poker. The movie, and I guess this is to Sorkin’s credit, is more about the people and much less about the game.

If you like good character based movies, go see it. If watching a movie about poker floats your boat, forget it.

The average joe would not go in enough numbers if it was a realistic movie purely about poker players. They wouldn't have the capability or desire to understand what's going on. Producers realise this, which is why they make disgraceful movies like Titantic. There were so many amazing characters and true stories they could have based that movie on. Instead they dumb it down and base it on a fictional love story. So the makers of this movie not focusing on the poker aspect and instead the drama of the main character does not surprise me.

I wish you hadn't made the comparison to Titanic. I hated that movie.

I haven't seen it yet but I will because I think the story is compelling.

I read a very similar review to your conclusions. Basically a well-written movie, but this is NOT the next Rounders. I understand that there are also some scenes with illogical poker play (a shame that even if the focus of the movie isn't on poker itself, they didn't get some pro to advise how to actually play the game).

From what I read, if you go in expecting a move about poker play, you will be disappointed. So not a bad movie at all, but you have to understand what you're watching.

Apparently there was expert advice to the contrary but directors are more interested in portraying their vision than they are in poker accuracy. See https://twitter.com/savagepoker/status/949683151848091648

I've read several reviews stating this was not really a poker movie. I'm ok with that as long as I go in with that expectation.

I watched this movie last night, and I liked it a good bit. I do think they could have made the movie longer instead of skimming by a lot of info.
It gives a lot of insight into her life though.
