I think limping and calling small raises with speculative hands like suited connectors and one or two gappers is very profitable if you get multiple callers and are disciplined enough to let go of the hand if you miss and aren't a chaser. Those are the hands that are completely hidden and will stack an opponent if you nail the flop.
 
Of course you can only do this when the blinds are low or your stack is well above 20 M when the blinds are higher.
 
On the other hand, the great hands like AA, KK, QQ, Ak etc don't really increase in value til later in the tourney when playing speculative hands is too expensive. So, early tournament, I wouldn't go crazy with them trying to get donks and fish to fold preflop. Play them standard by raising your normal amount, evaluate the flop and go from there. Don't overplay them preflop or postflop. You have to be disciplined enough to let them go and not lose too much money with them. In the early stages of tournaments, these hands always seem to win small pots or lose monster flops because they get overplayed. These hands true accuulative power lies in the middle and late stages of the tourneys where you'll stack people.
