If you are asking about MTTs everything above 20% is very good!

In higher stakes though I think 15-18% is also decent.

Those numbers changes for the SnGs etc.

Obviously, this figure must be representative for a sufficiently large sample (500 minimum tournaments).

Top professionals tend to have ITM rates of 15-18% with ROIs of 130%ish. It’s possible to finish ITM about 30% of the time if you don’t mind min cashing, but the real money is on the final tables and that’s where professionals make their real money.

Open the lobby of the tournaments that you usually play, and see what percentage of players get paid there. (for example: ITM 150 out of 1000 players). If your hit percentage is higher, that's good. But it also matters how far you go in the standings, because serious money is only at the final table.

ITM for tournament players is not the most important indicator in poker since you can often get into the prize zone, but you may never get to the final table, and the main prizes in tournament poker are always played at the final tables, which is why ROI is more important !! ! in the leaders in terms of winning money, you can see players with completely different ITM indicators http://www.officialpokerrankings.com/pokerleaderboards.html

Many people write that for MTT 20% is enough. But in my opinion, for a successful game a good plus you need at least 40%. 20% are pennies that you do not want to look at.

I completely agree with those numbers. If you reach 30% ITM, you will min cash alot, you won't make alot of final tables.

Depends.
30% min cashing is grinding a bankroll.
15% is better for allowing multiple games, with little concern for bankroll varance.
Of course it depends on how much you invest per game, and the time per investment.
