They are used in live play too, its just mental notes there (although I have seen some players with notebooks at the tables).
 
On most sites you can simply move your cursor over the players Icon or right click the icon and you will see player notes. Unless you are having an exceptional run you will be folding 70% of your hands, so you have pleanty of time to make the notes.
 
Who should you make notes on? EVERYONE, every hand they play should give you something to write down. unless they are on post and fold even the ones that dont play a hand should have a note that says so.
 
What should you put in the notes?
Don't do like I did when I 1st started the transition from live play to online play and put something like "Lucky bastard, bust out when every you can". The only information that gives you is that you took a bad beat and you will have thousands of them over your career.
 
here is a sample of what I put
 
25 aug 08 bet 200 from ep got one caller flop was 3c 9h Qc
pushed all in, with Ad 4s
 
next time you seem him make more notes, see if he is consistant with playing/pushing with A x.
 
 
If the site doesnt have player notes, use a note book, (different one for each site).
 
Remember that everyones play changes as they get better so the date is critical. and notes need to be updated as more information becomes available to you. but try not to delete any inforamtion that is accurate and unemotional.
