Just as a side note, receiving a penalty afterwards is standard for telling someone what your hand is too. Your hand will rarely (should never, actually) be ruled dead in that situation.

Imagine you're holding 28 off in bb and everybody but the button folds, small blind folds and you check.... flop comes 378 ... you check, button bets small and you call... turn is a 4, you check, button bets pot... you call.. river is a 4... you check, button shoves all in... you announce 'I have an 8' and the button instantly frowns because he knows if you call he loses... so you instantly call.
This is why you're not allowed to announce your hand.

this is a very good thread and a good read for any1 heading to play live poker. it's gave me a few extra tips to imrpove my overall play at playing live. WHICH IM DOING GREAT AT ATM. hehe.

I have"nt played in a live game before and it gives me a nice idea how to act in a live game. Thanks for the info and I will definitely follow your guidelines when I play my first live games. See you at the tables.

Simple rule of thumb: don't muck your cards until the dealer has awarded you the pot.
Yea it does happen. Anyone see Phil Ivey muck his winning flush during the main event last night?
