Poker can indeed cause depression, as can any form of gambling, or indeed anything that you do where there is a possibility of the outcome not coming to your liking! Think how you feel when you go to your local bakery for your favourite type of bread, or your liquor store for your favourite tipple and in both instances they are out of your favourite, or when you try to chat up someone and get the cold shoulder or when you favourite team plays a big game and loses. All pretty bad feelings eh? And then they all come on the same day, that is pretty depressing. Lots of far worse things also cause and contribute to depression, not just your cake store having sold out of cakes! Consider then poker...and no matter how you play you just can't hit a hand, or your recent winning spell has suddenly come to a place where you have bet more than you should and your bankroll life rests on this one hand, and your AA gets beaten by a lucky 72o hitting trips on the river! Depression builds. It may not be just one thing, i.e. all poker related, but it could be. It could be enough that you continually lose and lose and can't stop losing. It could be that poker contributes to something else that is pretty sh1tty in your life and before you know it you have lost control of the remote! The worst thing is you can't even stop doing the things that make you feel so bad. There is nothing you can do about it....it just keeps going from worse to worse. There is no end. There is no light at the end of the tunnel! STOP!!!!!!!! You can do something about it! What can you do? Firstly....whatever it is causing the depression....STOP DOING IT!! WHAT DO YOU MEAN, YOU CANT! Of course you can. Just because your life will change, and maybe even dramatically, you can change and you CAN STOP and you CAN make it better. I know someone who was depressed at work. I told them to quit their job and get another one (or at least get another job before they quit so they would still have a job!) They quit their job and instantly felt better about themselves and worked on recovery. Had they stayed in that job Im sure they would have done something really bad. So, I can't quit my job, I hear you say! So, that may sound drastic, but yes of course you can. If your job is getting you depressed them leave it! You are more important. If its poker....QUIT Poker. It won't get better while you continue doing the things that depress you. Now I'm not a GP or a doctor or shrink or anything like that, but maybe if we start to face reality with reality as the starting point, then maybe the world could become a less depressed place. You are only here once, don't mess it up. Enjoy life and don't let stuff get you down. If you still struggle and can't deal with it alone....talk to someone...anyone.....you will be amazed how different it will all feel. I cannot accept or take any responsibility or be held account for any actions that people take based on what I have just written or write after this point. (Unless of course if you change your life around and make your millions and you want to show some acknowledgement for my contribution to that) If you quit your job and become homeless, then that will also be depressing for you. Have plan but make a change. DON'T just keep doing the same thing that depresses you. As for poker....if it's depressing you, just give it up. Alternatively what you may find is that you are just rubbish at playing poker our haven't really got your head around the concept of probability or the game of poker itself. Go on a course and learn how to play properly! Have a great day! BB
