Poker bots are out there, but their play is very low level.. their possible profitability comes form playing poker en mass.  100 tables at $0.50 per hour kind of thing.
 
I can understand why a lot of people dont understand this.. they simply don't understand how computers work.  Its easy to overestimate what computers are capable of.. in this day and age the whole multi-media experience seems as though they are far more sophisticated than they really are.
 
Computers are great at number crunching and following instructions to the letter.
 
But they don't think.
 
Polaris is..IMO the most sophisticate Bot out there.  It plays HU limit poker and is now thought to be very tough.. but not unbeatable.
 
Although Polaris is a poker bot, it runs on a multi-million dollar computer and has taken a research team years to get it to this point.  It is part of a research project into artificial intelligence.  Poker is used as the framework because it is a game of incomplete information and therefore requires AI to solve it.. the computer has to work without all of the pieces to the puzzle..unlike chess which is a solvable game because it is a game of complete information.  Choosing poker as the framework is also a good PR stunt.. this research team will need funding and the use of poker raises the team's profile.
