If i try to play tennis for example with a professional player i will not be able to win a single game for sure no matter how hard i try. If you treat it as a game and do your best to improve your skills you will win more frequently than you loose but you can't win all the time and that makes it interesting.

About the vice element - well that is much more related to individual people's character than anything else. If gambling is in your head you will find on what to gamble to spend your money. Most hardcore gamblers need the thrill caused by the element of chance or luck in a gambling so for example roulette or slot machines would be much better choices than poker for such people. As already said - key is not to be obsessed by poker just like with anything else.
