There are a lot of "donks" out there, there are also a lot of really talented players. But the one true thing that divides the good from the bad is how you play hands that aren't made. Everyone can play made hands, whether they be monsters, flopped top pair, 4 to a flush, ect. What separates the truly talented is how they play hands on disconnected and disjointed boards. Most people think of pinball as a luck game, but I argued a case where a guy had a pinball machine in his house, he had it rigged to dispense a jackpot if you scored a certain level of points, there were a lot of players (he lived in a frat house). A lot of people played that game and it was difficult to reach the point level because the ball can take a bad bounce or come off of a bumper at a bad angle or any number of other things that people would call bad luck. But there were a handful of people (including my client) that could hit the point total regularly because of their skill level. This is just like poker and when/if there is ever some decent legislation (like that bill in NY) that gets online poker legalized again, I will use the same arguments to try and secure poker rights for all of us. There are a lot more good players than there used to be, and the information age has evened the divide between the pros and amateurs, but the game has also changed as well and there are so many different levels and types of players that make the game challenging, fun and (for those who are good enough) profitable.
