Outside of our poker "bubble" (online forums, casino cliques, coaching sites, etc.) do you find poker as a topic of interest and conversation in your community? I am always pleasantly surprised when I am talking with a friend or acquaintance and they mention they enjoy playing poker. In my area (Rural NY, USA) most poker playing is done either at home games or at one of the local Native American casinos. Online isn't very big, it hasn't been since Black Friday (or whatever day of the week that was ). With that being said, people are usually surprised when I tell them I still play online, and can actually withdrawal funds! :D

What is poker like in your town?

I don't run into many poker players in my community. I'm 50 but i'm mostly around a lot older people and most don't trust the online aspect . In my small circle there are a lot of rummy and canasta players. I don't travel far tho lol.

In my country poker is still considered by many people as pure gambling like lottery, bingo, slots and so on. Many people have prejudices regarding poker and it takes time and efforts to show them the difference. As always in life proof is in the pudding so if you can show people that you actually have sustainable income from poker they slowly change their mind. Gradually situation will further improve.

Let them believe that so if they ever play against you, you can stack them!

I'm assuming you are either in high school or early college? The reason why I assume that is because as people mature they (hopefully) let go of preconceived notions and learn to simply observe things as they are. :)

Thanks for the response, and GLGLGL!

It is very interesting how differently poker is perceived, depending on the country you live in. I know Bulgaria is very different than the United States but the law in my country tries to make it as hard as possible to be able to play safe online poker. These things take time, as the public's perception changes slowly. I believe in time, people will see that poker is a game of skill and can be safely enjoyed. :D

GL to you!

many play, gather with friends, or in illegal clubs. Unfortunately (fortunately) in our country banned gambling, including poker. Therefore, poker is not a very significant part of society, but it is still a limited circle of fans, and it is a pity

I rarely mention anything about poker when talking to friends. I don't hangout with poker players. 10years ago I would talk about poker. I was excited about it & people were interested (it was all over the tv here then). There's still some homegames & small tourneys in my area but I don't hear of too many who play online anymore. (mostly because they can't win).

Unfortunately I have no one to talk to about poker in my community. Work colleagues are involved in sports betting and consider that they need a lot of time to play poker compared to betting on a football match, for example. These aspects are also due to the fact that in my city there is no casino where poker is played compared to the many sports betting houses. My luck with the CC community where I can express myself and from where I can have a lot of information related to this beautiful game, for which I thank you!
