Congratulations, it takes a man to admit when he is wrong.  You've learned that regardless of the fact that they both have the same cards, different games require different strategies.  There will always be a little bit of luck involved with cards, but your play can greatly reduce that percentage.  When you play both, it's truly amazing to learn just how different the same game can be.  I'm actually swinging the other direction currently from sng to ring.  Good luck and it sounds like you'll do just fine.
 
In my experience, the sng requires a lot more patience and focus because every hand matters, even the ones you are [I]not[/I] in.  Eventually, it becomes a matter of when not if you will be faced with an all-in situation, the pressure of the blinds taking you over and drowning you.  The ring game is a little more relaxed and actually allows for an escape at any time, which is handy if you ever find yourself starting to tilt.
