The ONLY time your hand can go into the muck pile & still be live is if the dealer accidentally grabs your cards & mucks them. If that happens & your cards can be easily retrievable from the muck then your cards can be live again. That is why it is IMPERATIVE to always protect your cards at all costs. Since your opponents cards were the only live hand left he automatically wins the pot & does NOT have to show.
