I always announce my hand and then turn it over in front of me and on my side of the table line if there is one. Especially if it is on me to show first. Even if you read your hand wrong, like say you announce a straight when you have a flush, the dealer is obligated to use the best possible hand shown provided you don't allow them to be mucked.
