(did you ask why it was ruled a string bet? - you should always ask why if you do not understand a floor call)
One thing we may be missing is that the poker room may not use a betting line.  If this is true then anytime you count chips out in front of your cards it is your action (which is why you will see many players count out chips to the side of their cards or behind them).  If this is the case, the moment you dropped one chip to count out the call was made, and adding to that stack can be determined stringy - especially if you dropped them individually from another stack.  This is probably what happened.
The only other thing I can think of is that you did two motions forward with chips and didnt realize it - but the above is more likely.

It is a good idea to always say raise when you raise, this way you can never have an issue.  I know it seems amateurish, but in reality it is the opposite.
