If you answer you prefer MTT, then I think you should maybe try the freeroll route until you can get a bigger bankroll to allow for strict BRM.  $10 will not last long in MTT, unless you get extremely lucky.  You would probably need at least 100 buyins for a tourney like the Daily Dollar to prevent yourself from going broke and to be able to give yourself a chance at seeing if you can turn consistent profit.

If you are serious about making the most of the $10 you have now however, I think grinding .01/.02 (2nl) shortstack holdem during happy hours is the safest way.  It is the closest you can get to practicing responsible BRM on a $10 roll.  If you buy in full to the 2nl shortstack games (.80 buyin), that would give you about 12 buyins.  This isn't really enough (usually you would need 20-25 buyins), but if you just play extremely tight and don't let yourself get on tilt when you get sucked out on (and you WILL get sucked out on) it should be enough to profit off the softer opponents.
