Why not do both? Play a tourney in one window cash in another.  Or two tourneys and two cash games (what I usually do)
Tourneys have a MUCH higher variance.  If you're new.  They're probably the way to go.  Luck can win tournaments.  A good hit in the right tourney can give you a massive ROI quick.  Another benefit, you can play micro buy and freerolls to really stretch the amount of time you're playing.  That play experience will teach you more than anything you'll read here. 
You will do well to get as much information away from the game as you can.  But, you will not find a better teacher than playing 100,000 hands.  Except for playing 200,000.  lol
My best advice, the same I remind myself of CONSTANTLY, focus on the decision(s) over the result.  
The better you play, especially vs larger weaker fields, the more bad beats you're going to take.  It's the downside to getting it in good the majority of the time. 
If you are new to the game- tiny buy in tourneys and freerolls are the safest bet to get the most play experience for your money.  They won't make you the most fast, but they're fun and you learn along the way.
