I've noticed that when a player is eliminated you sometimes have a situation where only a big blind is posted for the next hand, nobody posts a small blind. Then I noticed that in my FT SNG the button showed against a player that was no longer there (see screenshot).

What happens to the button when somebody is eliminated that would have been posting a blind in the next hand?

This situation is where the button is called as "dead button" as there is no player to act on where the button is placed due to the turn of events taking place in the previous hand as you mentioned.

I'm pretty sure that this is wrong. I've seen plenty of occasions after eliminations where you don't have a SB.

Yep, i know, you described that in your post.
my answer was for your question when the player eliminated would have been posting a BIG BLIND the next hand
in the case for the eliminated player posting the SB next hand, happens what you show in the pictures
in the case for the eliminated player posting the BU next hand, happens the dead button as rafael says
