I've been playing casino poker for probably thirty years and had the same thing happen to me once when I first started playing. Since that time unless everyone else folds, and I've double checked with the dealer that everyone has folded, I always turn over my cards. I actually saw the same thing happen yesterday during a showdown.

One of the two players turned over his hand containing two unconnected cards that made a straight. The other player holding 99, who had been hoping for his two pair to win, turned over his cards and congratulated his opponent on the straight. Another player spoke up and said that the player with the 99 actually had the higher end of the straight and he won the hand. If it hadn't been for that other player he would have given away a nice pot. :)

What I think happens is that we are concentrating so hard on what we are holding or what we are hoping for, that we don't notice what else our hand could be. If anyone knows someone going for their Phd in psychology that might be an interesting and unique subject to do a study on. :)
