I saw some good answers, but nobody said one of the glaring reasons why it's EXTREMELY difficult to win at poker. (Side note, It took me 15-16 years before I could consistently beat 2$/5$ NL. I'm not ashamed to admit that.)

Anyways, allow me to answer your question WITH a theoretical story.

You and your buddy have an argument about who is the better poker player. So, you two decide to play NL HD'EM, H/U, cash game, with a 10,000 buy in. You're going to play, 3-4 hours each day, everyday, over the next 6 months. You talk to the manager at the local casino, and they agree to broker this deal, given that you pay the standard rake. Well, after 6 months, you guys are BOTH down 5,000! And it turned out that the DEALER is actually the best player there! :icon_sant

Seriously though, like many things in life, the line between average and good, between good and great, is VERY VERY thin. And over time, to consistently win GOOD money, you have to be GREAT due to the rake. And, to be great, or a MASTER, at ANYTHING requires 10,000 hours of practice. (That's the typical amount of hours people associate with mastering something. I'm sure it applies to poker as well.)
