My family has a long-standing tradition for penny-poker games. Before I was in first grade, I knew the ranks of winning poker hands and understood the basics of betting and play. We're talking decades of play. The preferred games have changed, but we still like to play and it's still penny ante stuff. This is what we do, in good times as well as bad.
We recently had a family event that caused a lot of family to be in the area for a week or so. Naturally, we had to have a poker game. We decided to have a 5c-5cNL Hold'em cash game with a $10 min buy-in (no max).
We had two new players to the standard line-up. First, we had my six year-old [Max]. We play a lot of heads-up and he's a huge fan of the game. He's not exactly "good" because he doesn't really understand hand strength. Still, it's $10. I explained to everyone that he was going to play. I told them I was pretty sure my $10 was gone, but I bankrolled him. I warned them that he was aggressive as hell. The second new player, my sister's husband [Bill]. He claimed to play down and the local card room and know what he's doing.
We're playing, and it folds to Max, who looks impishly around to the 3 people still in the pot. "RAISE," he declares. "Fifty-five!" He then counts out 55c in chips and throws them forward. Then he starts laughing hysterically. We're all laughing because he's funny as hell. I'm also sure that I am watching my money go down the toilet.
He gets called by Bill and another player. The flop comes J-6-3r (or something like that) and it checks to Max. "BET!" He then looks at the middle, he's trying to count how much money is out there. I think he gives up or makes a mistake, "$1.95!" He counts a buck ninety-five and puts it out there.
It folds back to Bill, who is just like, "What do I do here? He could have anything." He then calls.
Turn is a blank,
Max bets $7.something (the rest of his chips). He originally tried to bet 1,000--he's confused about how to properly bet everything. Bill thinks for a bit and calls with A-6o. Max shows pocket Kings. The river is a blank and Max takes down a huge pot. Bill rebuys for another $10.
A few hands later, it happens again. This time, Max flops two pairs with K-T (he thinks any two cards bigger than 9 are playable). Bill goes broke with J-T. Yes, Bill loses another 200xbb to the six-year-old.
Eventually, Max gets bored with the game and is playing more attention to his ipad. He wanders off. Bill, who is tilted to hell, proceeds to drop another $30 before my sister pulls him away from the table. I am officially forbidden from ever playing with him again. It's not even my fault! It was the kid.
Max was thrilled to find out that he had $15 after he paid me back the $10 I loaned him. That's way better than the tooth-fairy money he gets.
Anyone else have fun family poker games? I love our games. They may be for loose change but they're so much fun.
