I have been playing for about a year. During the year I have had several periods of "bad luck". But I have not had one recently.
 
This is not to say that I have not been getting runs of bad cards. In fact, most of the cards I have been getting are bad. But what is different is my understanding of how I played a hand.
 
In the beginning, I played my hand and did not pay much attention to the other players. When I lost a pot I attributed it to bad luck.
 
What I was missing were messages from the other players via their betting. Once I recognized this fact, I was able to get out of hands before I lost a lot of chips.
 
When I lose a pot at showdown, 80-90% if the time it because I was not watching the table action, calculating pot odds or being agressive enough. It is only a small percentage of the time that someone sucks out on me.
 
My game needs lots and lots of improvement, but I no longer attribute a run of losses to "down days". My bad playing is usually the reason.
 
I find that you have to be in the right mindset for poker. Playing at a time when there are other things going on in your life can have an visible effect on your playing. 
 
I now blame my "down times" on my poker skills, or lack of same, and look to learn from my mistakes. 
 
Of course, you might be doing everything right and have just been getting bad luck....
