A lot has changed since Doyle Brunson wrote Super System, by his own admission. When he wrote it most players knew little about the maths behind poker, and the majority of players could be run over by aggressive play. Books like Mike Caro's one on tells changed the whole 'reads' skills required, because it moved false tells from the domain of a relatively select few pros to a more common occurrence.

Reverse tells now being somewhat more common, you need to look at someones style of play over a longer period to spot the genuine tells from the deliberate, fake ones. This does tend to mean that if you're put in a difficult position early on in a game, you may just need to make your best guess, because you haven't had the chance to work out what a given 'tell' actually means for that person yet. This is one of the reasons why some fairly common advice is to play relatively tight for a little while, so you can mostly watch the other players to get a read on them.
