This is a feature that truly unites all great poker players, because a good observer can make a difference at decisive moments.

Are you a good observer? So, tell me how many squares we can observe in the figure below.

Let the games begin!

16 squares --- 8 small ones, 8 double the dimensions of the smalls.

There are of course numerous square-like shapes, but those have intersecting line segments that negate the "squaritude" of the geometry. e.g. the L shaped pieces, with the addition of a small square, could appear as one double dimensioned square, but it really is not a square, it is two separate geometric figures.

Unless this is shown on a screen with square pixels. then of course there are thousands upon thousands of squares.

a) 40

b) 41 if this is a trick question and there was an attempt to make the blue background a square as well.

c) 42 if you can include a border in the shape of a square.

d) 43 if it includes b and c from above.

Unless there's some devious trick behind this puzzle, I believe the answer is 40. :)

Same. It took me about 10 seconds to count 40 because I've seen a similar one before. I saw a 4x4 grid of "16 obvious squares" and that total came to 30 total squares (I still remember how to "find" each one, but I don't want to list them all here). I used this 30 as a starting point and then counted for the "extra" ones that the center designs create, so I came up with 40 squares pretty quickly.

Okay, I didn't count the blue background as a square; I think that is just the formatting border from cardschat, but all right - creative thinking to count that one though.

My answer is 56
1 - the black border containing the whole pattern 4x4
18 - medium Black border squares inside the large square
8- tiny black border squares
9 - squares combining 4 squares together 2x2’s
4 - 3x3’s
16 - aqua blue squares
Totalling = 56

Thanks again Acidburnfx :)

I count 80 if you include that all of the squares have both an inside and outside perimeter due to the black border on every square is so thick.

My original answer was 40 but I'm gonna have to agree with Fivefor.

I counted 40. From the smallest to the largest: 8 + 18 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 40
