Can you stay a good poker player without studying the game?

I hope everyone agrees that in order to be a profitable poker player, you need to study the game. This includes things like doing hand reviews, watching successful players, and maybe even getting coaching. Do you think there is a point where you could have enough skill to stop studying? Would you be able to continue playing a good game?

as in life ....If you stop studying poker, your skills will stagnate or decline, as the game and strategy are constantly evolving, leading to a loss of your competitive edge and potentially a shift from being a winning to a losing player over time. Continuing to study is essential for identifying and fixing leaks, understanding evolving game dynamics, and maintaining profitability, especially at higher stakes where the competition is tougher.

Wow, what a good question! I can say that I don't spend much time studying. But I play a lot, mostly tournaments! I make a lot of mistakes and learn from them. Of course, it would be nice to use some game strategies. I think training from experienced players is very important. But I'm just playing myself so far, I like it better this way! I hope my game has improved, but until I took 1st place, the final table was playing, but I didn't win 1st place. I hope to win a big tournament so I can say that I'm playing better.

Learning is important in poker, just like in any profession, the more you study, the more you know, and your skill level depends on that knowledge. But if you only want to play for fun and go with the flow, studying isn’t as essential. Still, the more effort you put into learning, the stronger your game will be.

In my very opinion this depends on the limits. On lower limits u might continue to win without much studying but if you want to beat higher limits there is no way around it. Successfull high stakes players study a lot i guess to to be able to compete on the highest level.

In my opinion and experience, the rules of poker are not very complicated but it is not a predictable game, also the style of play in tournaments especially freerolls is very different from playing where you spend money. Practice is the best learning, and the longer you play the less you have to lose, also smart bankroll management will help you not to go into the red.

Just a rec/hobby player. I play mainly 2nl-50nl full-ring and $5+ MTT's. I've just done hand reviews for studying the last 15+ years. Haven't hardly studied at all to really advance my game. May not be a big winner cause of the stakes I play but I am a winning player. The things one really needs to be good at and have nailed down are the following: bankroll management, mental toughness/tilt control, patience and game selection. If one is pretty good at and has those 4-5 nailed down he can be a winning player with a pretty simple/easy TAG strategy/style while learning to adapt to each table, villain and session.

The small bit of studying I have done outside of hand reviews has been studying 6 max. Which I still am not that good/comfortable playing so don't play very much.

Experience is a big part of poker, as it is in other areas of life. If you play a lot, after a while you will gain this experience and be able to stop learning theory.

You can be a good player without studying the game. What makes you a winning player vs being a losing one? To be a winning player you have to play better.
You can not study and play well and be a winning player. At the same time if you don't study you are most likely making some mistakes (leaks) that costs you a bet from time to time.
If you study (sharpen the saw) you are likely to make the correct play more often and have a higher win rate.
I think you can get by without studying but if you study you will have an edge over the person who does not study.
Roy West said in his book 7 Card Stud 42 lessons---"When you are not practicing, someone, somewhere, is practicing. And when you meet, he will beat you."

I like to think I’m the exception to the “study or fail” rule when it comes to poker <3

I just can’t study from books, videos, or even phone calls — I need a real, 3D person right there explaining things to me. That’s the only way it really sticks for me.

But don’t get me wrong, I do study in billibooonese. I watch what everyone does, I play all the games here, and I soak up everything like a sponge. CC is honestly my main study tool — the freerolls, the community games, the leagues, and the special events. I even chat with players who were in the same hands as me to get their perspectives.

So yeah… I might not study the “normal” way, but I’m still always learning <3

The word of the day-----billibooonese. the scary part is that I get it.
When I go play live tournaments, I wear a hat and use it to tilt the brim down to where I can watch the opponents hands without seeing their faces. I can figure out what's going on better by doing this.

When I look just a few years back, I realize how different poker was, and how different my own game was. If that means anything, it certainly means that poker is far away from being a static game. Therefore, in order to keep up with the flow, we really need to stay updated, and that only means one thing: playing and getting experience is not enough, studying is a must.

I think it depends a lot on what you mean by “good.” If your goal is just to not lose money in your home game or to be a small winner at microstakes, then yeah, you can probably coast on fundamentals and experience. But if you want to actually move up, the player pool gets sharper every year. Even recreational players are watching YouTube solvers now 😂. If you’re not studying, you’re basically running in place while everyone else keeps jogging forward.

Define "good." Yes, you can stay your level without study, but you won't improve and most games are constantly changing, so you not improving with it will mean you'll get worse relative to the other players, but if you play with the same friends with the same strategies and they don't improve, then not studying will keep you at their level all the same.

YES, you can stay a good player without studying the game, If you're already a good player, what else is there to study? Just need to stay in form by playing.

Knowledge is learned by studying but skill is gained by practice.
Much like mathematics, just learn the theory & application is solving problems.
Theory doesn't change; its the same then, its the same now. Just different forms of problems.

Its just that... poker is a game that takes a minute to learn but a lifetime to master.

The game does not change drastical, even GTO does not change the game mechanics heavily.
If you have reached a certain deep amount of skill and understanding of your variant,
constant review of the (your play) game and your player pool is a rinse and repeat form of study.
If you notice that there some leaks in your game you have to work on that.
Adaption to the stakes you play may require some training in case you go up in stakes/buy in level.

This is not a yes or no question.
Our relative skill position in relation to other players may change over time if we stay stagnant. So we can always improve ourselves in comparison to others. But the game itself doesn't change that much. Sure, tendencies do change and what might have been the standard raise 10 years ago may not be the same today or tomorrow but I view that more of a whim of fashion than actual game evolving.

The one who hasn't made it yet is always more hungry for the victory.

I think study is necessary to be a good player. The game evolves and if you only do the same thing without changing, the game will leave you behind. Study can be formal or informal, though. Players who pay attention at the table, watching betting sizes, hand ranges, and player types/tendencies can also be considered to be studying. Studying more formally can help you understand what the other players are doing and strategies to combat them. Study can include GTO, range charts, and math, but it also includes betting tells, player types, and exploitative plays. The more I learn, the less I know...that is part of why I love this game (but also sometimes hate it).

Yeah, I think after a certain point, you’ll be able to play on autopilot and still do better than most guys at the tables

Ofc it depends on the limits

But in order to be profitable high stakes pro you should study a lot
