I don't usually take written notes on my opponents, however, visually and by remembering the names of the most outstanding players I've had the fortune to play with, I'm taking mental notes and that has also helped me improve my games.

I only do it in mid and high buy-in tournaments and cash and live mentally frame them, their abilities, weaknesses, etc. In the low buy-in games and freerolls I don't do it because a lot of beginners play, those who play for fun and those who play bingo, in these games almost no player maintains a style of play, they usually vary too much.

Haha me too seriously I don't think it's possible to have notes and labels for all the players at the Poker room.
But, I think if you are playing everytime the same stack with work you can manage to have information about all your opponents.
It's recommended but personally I do it when I see something very special

Notes are important if you like stacking chips.

Case in point (recent tournament): I had 77 on the button, early stages, 32bb effective. CO rfi to 3x. my note says he ALWAYS rfi 3x. i call. flop comes Q32 rainbow, villain c-bets 1/2 pot. my note says he ALWAYS c-bet halfpot regardless of IP/OOP, flop texture, etc. AND he's sticky. i shove, he calls with ATs. pocket seven holds.
