I hate using play money to play. I find I can't take the game seriously when doing so.

The only thing I used play money for is on Poker Stars for Cards Chat home games. And I just built mine up for that stuff by going every so many hours and collecting the free money they give you.

Play money is great for education, especially if you can get you and some buddies (aka home games) in the same game so you can talk about hands after-the-fact.

Once you have the fundamentals down, if you want to up your game, you have to up your competition. People play differently when they have "something to lose."

I really enjoy the game itself, I think play money is a great way to improve your skills and knowledge. Though sometimes it may seem like a waste of time, if a person really enjoy the game then I wouldn’t consider it a waste of time.

I don't get the point of playing with play money.. I think that's a waste of time.
Better to deposit 10 bucks or so and grind micros..

I play regularly on a play money home game on PS. The group is called Rec.Poker and it is free to join and play. The level of play is better than most play money tournaments in my opinion and it is a lot of fun. I encourage you to check it out and join the fun.

Depends:

For beginners is good because you can train all of the sport aspects from movements until a bankroll building, I started with 15,000 and now I have 2M, but I never bought it, I took the amount given by PokerStars, I play hard for real, does not matter if is real money or play money!

I´m migrating from live poker to online poker and I´m basically doing it only with play money.

Playing for chips and playing for money are completely different things. There is no value in chips and such a game is completely different
Honestly, both free and paid on micro limits - the game is the same

I really think that play money games are great to learn poker and the different games. I played a lot of play money cash games and tournaments in the beginning and I enjoyed it. The fact that you can learn for free is a good thing if you want to a better player. Sure, a lot of players do not the games seriously but on the other hand I spend many hours having fun and learning in those games.

Never payed for play money. I play only events with 20k buy ins and finish high in home games often. That's why I have millions of it, wish I had few dollars of real money there instead lol.

Without money, poker is no longer a psychology game, it means most plays are careless, I think they are better used to get familiar with poker room software, not a good way to practice your poker skill.

It's a fine way to learn the basics. If you learn well you will never risk your money, beyond the first deposit to become a money player. Then I suggest stick to freerolls at first, then progress up the micro stakes, etc slowly. You can always take a step back if you blow your roll .

Or if you are happy entertaining yourself with free play, there's no harm in that. But in my opinion it isn't real poker without the elements of risk and reward.

I don't play money because I don't think the majority of players don't take the game seriously. So, If I had to choose I would play freerolls because I think the level of the players is the same but I can win some money playing.
Not all games are played very loosely on the play money. For example, seven-card stud is almost exclusively played by Americans, and there is a very neat careful game, which is quite difficult to win, especially at 10K/20K bets ))

You can play if you don't want to lose real money. But there the level of opponents is small or they are not playing seriously. Therefore, it does not help to develop.

I now find 'no one takes play money seriously' as another tired poker cliche. As a few of us continually point out, you play higher stakes or venture into MTTs in general, and people play the games seriously.

Then as also pointed out before (a few times) you now find 'badged' players who have played thousands of real money hands playing in the MTTs for practice. Just because an individual does not take play money seriously (fair enough) does not mean others do not - doh!

In fact I would argue the play on Replay is generally better than half the free rolls I played in this weekend.

I think its a good start for people that need practice but its not a serious play so its good to play but not good to teach..lol. its all about practice makes perfect. Good luck and have fun :D

In the beginning, when I was just playing online poker for the first time, I played on play money, but then I discovered freerolls, and accordingly I forgot about play money forever)).
Even when I found out that they can be exchanged for real money, I did not play on them, this is a stupid activity, because there are freerolls, well, or make a deposit of 5$.
