hey johnny congrats on your big wins! just wondering how did you go about learning mtts at the start? I'm only playing tiny stakes at the moment and watching a lot of videos to help my game but would be nice to get advice from someone who's actually a winner :D

I guess at the start I just played and went from there. Tbh I was playing micro stakes for ages not really knowing what I was doing until I found CardsChat. I've been an active member here for 3 years and only now do I feel like I have a solid grasp on MTTs. Although I picked up a hell of a lot here that put me ahead of the pack, my main turning point was when I was backed first time and had some one on one coaching with one of the best low-mid stakes regs at the time. He taught me a lot of things like bet sizing, stack size considerations, shove/fold game, ICM and how to play the different stages of a tournament. It would be hard for me to put down everything I know here but if you have any specific questions or you think you have any particular leaks then ask and I will try my best to answer.

Congratulations on all the recent cashes John!

I'm gonna start playing my first MTTs today and I was thinking it would be extremely helpful if you could record a video of one of your grinds and talk about some of the tournaments specifics, stuff like shoving ranges when short-stacked and how SPR should alter your decisions.

+1 for a video John. I'm sure it would be interesting to watch, if you are going to outline your thoughts as you go through levels and bet sizing decisions etc. I've seen a few acoimbra vids, so it's not like I'm a cash purist or anything :)

Also not sure what MTTs I should be buying into. What % of my BR should I allow myself for a single BI, like 1-2%?

thanks for the advice john! just two questions, before you got staked were you a winning micro mtt player? also is there any specific posts or topics on cardschat that helped you improve your game? when i'm playing scott i use 0.5% for turbos and 1% for normal speed mtts and then take the odd shots at ones with weak fields but i'm a bit of a bankroll nit :D

I won't be playing much over the next week, so I may take some time out and make a video of one of my tournaments or something.

Yeah, before I got staked, I was a winner, mostly cos of FTP. The smaller fields there are much better if you're not backed because the variance can be brutal as the first few pages of this thread will show you.
I read through as much as I could on the golden archive, think Egon Towst's thread on your first final table sticks in the mind, but generally just reading and debating and absorbing as much as possible. Also, being able to filter out the crap and try to implement the good stuff.

Playing a big session today including my biggest online buy-in since I sattied into the Sunday Million. Hopefully should be the softest Sunday of the year. If people want to watch how I play, feel free to rail any of my tournies and if you have questions about hands or whatever, boom them and post them here and I'll try to answer.

hey jonny was watching your grind and there was a had i wanted to ask you about, in the big 8.80 you shoved 20bb ep with 55 and got knocked out by aces, what was the thought process behind shoving fives there? Good luck for the rest of day!

Jonny are you playing (or considering to play) any Knockout tournament. There are really good ones in PS (with 1.35 buy in, 7k GTD) and what are your thoughts on time limit and knockout tournaments. Good luck xx !

Yeah I think sometimes I shove kinda light in these spots. I don't want to open and be OOP with a hand that doesn't flop well and often you can just get into a flip spot or pick up the blinds and antes. Note that I would only do this when antes are in play. It's a slightly higher variance route but taking all those marginal +EV spots help you build a big stack.

Yeah you can see from my schedule that I have a number of these, the $2.70, $5.40 and $13 levels as well as the Saturday Eliminator which is a $27 KO. They're great value since people adjust incorrectly trying to get bounties. However, the turbo KOs have brutal structures and you need to have a good shove fold game to have a chance. Don't know much about time limit tournies, have never grinded them. Doubt you could ever get a great ROI in them but they are good for a quick fix.
