Why people still play in a tournament with ridiculous structures?

These days I am seeing a lot of tournament with ridiculous structure.For example:

a.Hyper/turbo tournament where the blinds increase every 2/3 minutes.

b.Tournament with bad payout structure where less than 10% of the field got paid.

C.Tournament with ridiculously looong late registration sometimes exceeding 20 level.

Why did people still play in these type of tournament and what kind of +EV they are expecting?

I'm basically a new player, only 3 months taking it seriously, and only like 2 weeks ago I realized how bad was play in those structures. Playing a lot of bad freerolls that was rewarding me in general only $0,50-1,00 in 8 hours
You know, turbos played with only 1000-1500 chips...
The newest need to take care and chose their games better

1st Im not a fan of Hypers but alot of people like them.
2nd if only 10% of the firld gets paid and im in that 10% guess what more money in my pocket.
3rd long late reg = more players = more money in my pocket wheres the problem?

If you don't like it don't play them, but don't complain either.

why do people complain about late reg??? when your playing a tournament with that type of structure the late reg has no baring on the outcome.... you have to realize any MTT with 1000+ runners your looking at sitting in front of your computer for 6+hours regardless. 8+ if you make it final table. So why not get as much as possible into the prize pool if you are going to invest that kind of time???

Why can't he complain about them? (abundance of hyper &/or poorly structured tourneys). Isn't that the reason for his post?

My guess is, many newer recreationals like the hyper format stuff. Maybe for them the excitement in poker is watching the hands get allin pre... & then watch & "SEE WHO WINS!". Maybe they believe it negates other's skill advantage (in a sense it does... in some ways).

Long gone are the days when a player could scroll down a lobby and 90+% of the tourneys were your standard 3,000 chip, 10min. blind type games. Now it's sift/sort through to find 'a few' if this is what you're hoping to play.

Some sites are ridiculous.. ie. iPoker network sites' lobbys. And the selection keeps on getting worse.

the structures are bizarre but i think it just its just a different pace and strategy when playing turbo short stack mtts. i play these to release my inner all in!!!!

I guess you don't play on acr then, they have really long late reg periods, at least 3 hours or more. feels like an all day event even for a 1k or 2k guarantee. turbos don't bother me, if u don't wanna play fast just do regular levels. what should the payout be 25%, 10% is kinda steep, but that kinda depends on how many people enter? I think 25% might be splitting the money to much

The nice thing about the turbo games is that if your a noob player like me you arent as easily identified and than bullied

i.e. players recognize your lack of skill and then take all ur chips when ur sitting at the table with them for too long

It is just like anything else in poker...find your strengths and go with them. If you aren't strong at being aggressive (smart aggressive) early in a tourney, turbos may not be your thing. Tourneys with super long registration periods can be easy to chip up in, if played correctly, but if you don't want to play in a 6+ hour tourney, don't spend the money on ones with 10+ levels of registration. The same goes for payout %. Some players are awesome closers, and are willing to play aggressive and bubble 2-3 times and then make it all back plus a lot more when they cash in a tourney that only pays the top 10%. Generally, though, it is smarter to go with a tourney that pays at least 15% as far as BRM goes...variance can also be a huge factor! Go with what you are good at and work on the rest along the way. There's reasons to play all 3 of those. A. Solid push fold play with quick results B. A lot of good players like steep payout structures that favors there aggressive play late in tournaments. C. Bigger prize pools. C is my least favorite.

is a bingo more than anything else, that kind of torner in the initial niviles,
because the structure forces you to win a lot of chips in a short time,
and I also agree that most players are recreational

I play some turbo, even Hiper tournaments, because I have a low bankroll and this is an opportunity to get some reward by lower investment.

but I agree, that the principle is a bingo.

I dont see complaining anywhere in the OP.

It looks to me like he is asking why people play these structures. Which is a very legitimate question. He is also stating his view on these games.

Poker is getting like mcdonalds. Get in and get it fast, no substance.

These formats take skill away, and gamblers like that. Live casinos benefit greatly from faster structures. Faster bust out of players = less need for dealers = lower cost. Sucks that live poker is run mostly by Slot Machine Mentality venues like a Casino.

Yeah I agree,most of the mtts structure these days lean toward higher variances reaching to the point of either push or fold kind of mentality.It is almost impossible to find a good structure tournament ie. 3000 chip,10 min. blind with 6 level of late registration.

Yup BINGO is the best way to describe it,as lucks factor involved are significantly high.

Yeah it's like one of the fast food outlet,everything seem to be in the fast pace.At this rate the only games they will have are the flip Shove or Fold tournaments.

We are not discussing about satellite here.You can find discussions about satellites at different thread.

Im not keen on these structures either.
Like others, I take care on what tourneys I enter and they are becoming fewer and fewer.
The world has turned into a microwave society, wanting instant gratification and success with everything they do. I suppose poker is just following along with this social phenomena.

I like them hyper tournaments because they can end up very quickly and that 's up to you what kind of player if you're brave enough you'll take the money, if not slow you'll lose your chips , but I do not like that you can be too late to register a level and then these Players play for all or nothing and wastes game , just when you have a good supply then come these players and you have to follow them then you run into someone who is better and lose, but this is not poker , bingo , my opinion is that the tournaments too long game by 4 -5 hours and man loses concentration,and awards for the freeroll are not great but this is the freeroll so

And the tournaments with 2 rebuys? For example, the buy-in is 0.50 and the tournament starts paying 0.52 on ITM. The player who used the two buy-ins, now he is with -1.50, what is insane, but compulsive gamblers are there to pay this, obviously.

i see mtt,s on acr with a 5 hour late reg-thats much to long for late reg-i normaly dont play mtt,s with a late reg like that-its slim pickins for usa ppl playing these days not much to choose from -once poker is legal im sure alot of the sites that let usa ppl play will get smaller and without the bullshit late reg

I'm sng - mtt microlimits regular player and the reason to play in tournament with "ridiculous" structures, are: I play hyper (including spin n go on pokerstars), to "wam up". I strongly believe that as any other sport, i need to warm up before play for real. A few rounds of hyper before start sng and mtt turbo or regular, switch my mind in "agressive mode on", and allow me to size my day to day stamina, "tilt resiliance", among other variables to confront my poker session.
Other important reason to me, the hyper - turbo "ridicolous" structures, are the structure of almost any satellite to tournaments out of my bankroll, so, i play satellites of those tournaments when i have 100 or more buy ins of that kind of tournaments.
