Ever had an experience where you should've walked away but continued to gamble and lost it all.

Yesterday I started the day with $0.4 in my account on 888. Played a few super turbo and turbo freerolls and then placed well in the CC freeroll and got my account to ~$8. Thanks to @Tammy I've now been playing BJ a lot more so went in to play low stakes $0.5 - $1 hands and then built my bankroll to ~$20, started to take more risks and play bigger priced hands and at one point hit a $50 hand and got my bankroll to ~$138

I walked away, played some pokemon, had dinner, spent time with the kid and should have called it a day and withdrew some of the winnings.
...
...
...
But at 1am I was still up (I'm know that I shouldn't play when I'm tired...but i played anyway) decided just before heading to bed that I should try my luck again see if I'm still hot. Long story short got up to around ~$168 then decided to do another $50 hand...then another once i lost...then another. And now we're back to square one.

Luckily I never put my own money into sites, just use winning from freerolls, but either way, tough pill to swallow.

Have you got any stories?

The psychological draw of winning a life changing (or at least a meaningfully helpful amount of money , like for a holiday or nice clothes) amount of money is very strong. Meanwhile, the urge to gamble recover prior losses is even greater. Together, the two combine to ensure gamblers keep on playing until the house edge has done it's magic and the gambler has spent every last penny. Very few people have the discipline to recognise and avoid the above.

Personally I'd recommend sticking to poker - save blackjack for a bit of fun on cruise ships/holidays.

I have been playing poker for over 30 years. During that time, this has happened to me literally all the time for literally 25 years. I didn't stop and secure my profits so many times that I began to feel like an idiot, and not without reason.
Only in the last 5 years have I started to get up and leave on time.

I think we've all been there at one point or another. I know you know this already, but your scenario points out a good lesson on why we should set limits, and stick with them.

  1. Don't play with money you can't afford to lose (you already do this, so that's great!)
  2. Don't play when your tired or otherwise not 100% (intoxicated, stressed out, whatever the case may be).
  3. Don't play/bet outside your bankroll. With about $168, a $50 bet is nearly 30% of that. Even when grinding at the table, slow, steady gains are betting that big, crushing losses.
The good thing is you recognize all of this. The next step is making sure to stick to these principles next time.

I'd rather still focusing on poker than lucky games... because when your success depends more on lucky than skills, then it is not good for me.

But to spend 10% of a nice winning day in poker at other casino games, then it is ol, because when I lose, I lose only 10% of a nice winning day...

I once tilted away about $300 or so on roulette, $200 on a sports bet that went ridiculously sideways, and a bunch more in-between. There are lots of stories like this. Hopefully you learn your lesson.

I'll only add one thing to what Tammy said above.
When you're hot and winning is when you shouldn't stop unless you start losing. But when you were doing good and left with a nice amount, you shouldn't have never went back that same day.

Try to set a precise limit for yourself, an exact figure. And never exceed it. It is also very important to clearly define the amount of the so-called “take profit.” And if you want to avoid such situations in the future, you simply have to play with discipline. Discipline is the most important element in gambling. All this is quite difficult, but there is good news. Your discipline depends entirely on you :)

Happens to all of us. With a winning streak, greed sometimes take over & continuing playing eventually looses the bankroll or even more. Then when with a loosing streak, chasing losses also eventually looses the bankroll or even more. Discipline prevents loosing a lot but also prevents from winning a lot. There's that once in lifetime chance to beat the odds & win a life changing prize. Isn't that why we gamble? Who knows its just around the corner. Be that as it may, friendly advise is not to start in the fun world of gambling. Many will fall & a very few would be lucky to succeed.

Learn from your mistakes. Because if you can't do that, then gambling is simply not for you.

I think its the case for most, if the house has the edge ......you can make the case that any playing is too long.

If this is the first time this has happened to you, don't be sad, this is a case where you have learned a valuable lesson that you had to pay for. If this is not the first time, it means that you have not learned your lesson well, you should think about it carefully and draw conclusions.

“I should have ended the day and withdrawn some of my winnings... I shouldn't gamble when I'm tired.” Well, it seems you already have the answers, don't you? Lucky you spent the money without having to deposit your own!
And... “trying your luck again to see if you were still lucky” seems to be a recurring theme for those who have had a lucky day: “I think I can win more, I'm on a roll!”
I don't gamble anymore, but when I used to, there were some days similar to yours, but luckily whenever that happened I was able to recover, but to be honest, it was a relief when I decided to stop gambling! Good luck to you!

Yes sometimes I had this experience while playing cash games. After winning some stacks i decided to continue to play instead of leaving and lost some back.

Those who know when to stop know how to make money. I’ve lost money many times because I didn’t stop in time. You have to learn from your mistakes. You simply have to learn to stop.
